The best dewormer for dogs in 2026 is a broad-spectrum product that covers roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, AND tapeworms in a single dose. Drontal Plus Tasty (pyrantel + febantel + praziquantel) is the most complete option for routine deworming in adult dogs. Many cheaper dewormers omit praziquantel and miss tapeworms entirely. Dogs in India should be dewormed every 3 months minimum; puppies every 2–4 weeks until 3 months old, then monthly until 6 months. NexGard Spectra covers both external parasites and intestinal worms in one monthly chew.
You’re standing in front of a shelf — or scrolling through an online pharmacy — looking at seven different deworming products. Safeguard, Drontal, Panacur, NexGard Spectra, Heartguard. Different ingredients, different claims, different prices. You don’t know which worms your dog actually has, or whether you even need to worry.
Here’s the thing: this isn’t just a product choice. Giving a dewormer that misses tapeworms, or using one that’s only effective against one species, leaves your dog unprotected and potentially leaves you with a false sense of security. I’m going to walk you through how to make the right call.
The most common intestinal parasite in dogs globally. Transmitted through soil, infected prey, or from mother to puppies via placenta and milk. Heavy infections in puppies cause the classic pot-bellied look, poor coat, poor growth, and sometimes visible worms in vomit or faeces. Important zoonotic risk — roundworm larvae can infect humans, especially children.
Extremely prevalent in India’s warm, humid climate. Hookworms attach to the intestinal wall and feed on blood. Even small infections can cause significant anaemia in puppies. Transmitted through skin contact with contaminated soil, or via infected mothers. Signs include dark tarry stools, pale gums, weakness, and failure to thrive.
Acquired from contaminated soil. Produce intermittent bloody or mucoid diarrhoea. Eggs are hardy and survive in soil for years. Notably, whipworm eggs are shed irregularly, which means a standard faecal test can come back negative even in an infected dog. Many basic dewormers do not cover whipworms — always check the label.
Dipylidium is transmitted by fleas: the dog swallows an infected flea during grooming. If your dog has fleas, assume they may have tapeworms. Taenia is acquired through raw meat or hunting prey. You’ll see small, white, rice-like segments around the anus or in fresh faeces. Critically: standard dewormers that do NOT contain praziquantel will not work against tapeworms.
Technically not a worm but frequently grouped with intestinal parasites. Produces chronic, soft, frothy stools — often with mucus, sometimes with an unusually offensive odour. More common in kennels, multi-dog households, and dogs with access to contaminated water. Standard dewormers do not treat Giardia — it requires fenbendazole or metronidazole.
Not all dewormers cover the same parasites. Here’s what different ingredient combinations actually cover:
Ingredient | Roundworm | Hookworm | Whipworm | Tapeworm |
Pyrantel only | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ | ✗ |
Fenbendazole | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | Partial |

*NexGard Spectra does not cover tapeworms. Add a praziquantel dose twice yearly if tapeworm risk is present.
Drontal Plus Tasty contains three active ingredients: pyrantel embonate, febantel, and praziquantel. This combination covers ALL four major intestinal worm groups in a single dose: roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. It is my first recommendation for routine quarterly deworming in adult dogs, and the product I prescribe most often after diagnosing intestinal parasites.
It’s available in a palatable, flavoured tablet that most dogs accept without concealment. Dosing: 1 tablet per 10 kg body weight. Can be given with or without food. Suitable for dogs from 3 weeks of age (check weight minimums on the label).

NexGard Spectra is a monthly chewable that covers fleas, ticks, mites, AND intestinal worms (roundworms, hookworms, whipworms) in a single dose. If your dog is already on monthly flea and tick prevention, switching to NexGard Spectra consolidates parasite control into one chew. It does not cover tapeworms, so if tapeworm risk is present (flea exposure, raw meat), add a praziquantel dose twice a year.

Oriprim Vet Bolus (trimethoprim + sulfadiazine) is not a dewormer but an antibiotic combination with antiprotozoal activity. It is prescribed alongside deworming when secondary bacterial infection accompanies a parasitic infestation, or for protozoal diarrhoea including some Coccidia infections. Your vet will prescribe this when indicated — do not use it as a standalone dewormer.
Most owners deworm too infrequently. A single deworming dose clears current parasites — it provides no residual protection. Reinfection from the environment happens fast.
Dog Life Stage / Risk | Recommended Frequency |

Adult dogs — indoor only, controlled diet | Every 6 months minimum |
Pregnant females | Day 40 of pregnancy, at whelping, 2 weeks post-whelping |

Q: What is the best dewormer for dogs in 2026?
A: For routine deworming covering all major worm types, Drontal Plus Tasty (pyrantel + febantel + praziquantel) is the most complete single-dose option available. It covers roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. For combined flea, tick, and worm control in one monthly chew, NexGard Spectra is the most convenient broad-spectrum choice.
Q: How often should I deworm my dog?
A: Adult dogs with outdoor access or raw meat diets should be dewormed every 3 months. Indoor adult dogs with minimal exposure can be dewormed every 6 months. Puppies need deworming every 2 weeks until 3 months of age, then monthly until 6 months. Pregnant females should be dewormed at day 40 of pregnancy, at whelping, and again 2 weeks after whelping.
Q: Does Drontal Plus cover all types of worms?
A: Yes. Drontal Plus Tasty covers roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms in a single dose. This is its key advantage over many cheaper dewormers that do not contain praziquantel and therefore miss tapeworms entirely.
Q: Can I deworm my dog without a vet prescription?
A: Drontal Plus Tasty and several other broad-spectrum dewormers are available without prescription for routine preventive deworming. If your dog has persistent symptoms — diarrhoea that doesn’t resolve, significant weight loss, or anaemia — a veterinary examination is warranted to confirm the specific parasite and rule out other conditions before treatment.
Q: My dog has tapeworms. Which dewormer should I use?
A: Tapeworms require praziquantel for treatment. Drontal Plus Tasty contains praziquantel and is an appropriate choice. Note that NexGard Spectra does not cover tapeworms. Also address the flea infestation if Dipylidium (flea tapeworm) is the source — without flea control, tapeworm reinfestation will occur.
Q: How long does Drontal Plus take to work?
A: Drontal Plus typically begins killing worms within hours of administration. Dead worms are usually passed within 24–48 hours. You may see worms in the stool after treatment — this is normal and means the medication is working. Some infections, particularly heavy ones, may benefit from a repeat dose after 14 days.
Q: Is it safe to deworm a pregnant dog?
A: Deworming during pregnancy requires veterinary guidance as not all products are safe at all stages. Fenbendazole is generally considered safe during pregnancy. Drontal Plus Tasty is not recommended in early pregnancy. Your vet will recommend the appropriate product based on the stage of pregnancy.
Q: Where can I buy Drontal Plus Tasty for dogs in India?
A: Drontal Plus Tasty is available at MomasPets Shop (shop.momaspets.com) with delivery across India. NexGard Spectra is also available. If you need guidance on which product is right for your dog, book a free online consultation at momaspets.com.
